‘The King’s Speech’ receives 12 Oscar nominations

Here’s hoping that The King’s Speech team have chewed enough marbles and don’t find themselves with a King George VI royalty-sized stammer or two come Oscar time next month. The film, directed by Tom Hooper, leads all others with 12 nominations. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Scientists announced the list of nominees this morning.

Nominations for the period piece based on the true-life story of King George IV’s speech impediment include best picture, directing (Tom Hooper), actor (Colin Firth), supporting actor (Geoffrey Rush), actress (Helena Bonham Carter) in addition to production design, cinematography, costume design, original score, film editing, sound mixing and screenplay (David Seidler).

Clinton Stark of Stark Insider named The King’s Speech the best film of 2010, saying, “This is a sumptuous film with lots of heart. A historical piece, it tells an unusual story — the relationship between King George VI and his speech therapist — in a most unusual and uplifting manner.”

But will the Academy agree? With 12 nominations, chances are the film will walk away with more hardware than it did at the Golden Globes where the film The Social Network cleaned up.

Tom Hooper spoke to us last year at the Mill Valley Film Festival about The King’s Speech, the historical elements of the story, and describes the on-set rule he had to employ so that Colin Firth — “one of the world’s great raconteurs” — wouldn’t delay production too much.
