Glenn Close today received an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of a man in the period piece Albert Nobbs.

Others nominated for best actress include Viola Davis (The Help), Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo), Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), and Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn). Yes, the 2012 race features strong women in strong roles. With so much acting talent it’s going to be an exciting race. The 84th annual academy awards will be presented Sunday, February 26.

Co-star Janet McTeer also received an Academy nom for her supporting role, as did the makeup team.

Recently, at the Mill Valley Film Festival, Stark Insider was on location for the premiere of Albert Nobbs. At the press conference, the Damages star talked about playing the part of  a man, her relentless research that took her to some interesting places  in preparation for the role. She even reveals her dream Hollywood role in this video segment.

“This represents special effects makeup at its most refined,” says Close. “What happens to a woman’s face if she’s lived the life of a man?”

It’s an astounding performance.

Zoe Elton, Director of Programming at The Mill Valley Film Festival, calls it “seminal.” We agree!
