In 2008, Twitter grew 780%. This year doesn’t look as promising. A report today from compete.com, one of the new Web measurement services akin to a Nielson Ratings of sorts, shows that Twitter only grew 1.5% from April to May. Perhaps the Oprah and Ashton Kutcher halo effect is wearing off?
Coincidentally, Facebook tonight will open up a land grab for “vanity URLs” at 12:01am Eastern Time Sat. that will enable individuals and businesses to personalize their Web addresses.
Many industry observers consider this move another shot across the bow of Twitter which already offers custom URLs.
However, Facebook offers a more engaging platform for building a business or brand, by providing events, photos, videos, conversations, messaging, and an application development environment that presents unlimited opportunity.
How will 140-character Twitter keep pace?
