The Razor A2 Kick Scooter. But will look cool at the roller rink?

It’s amazing how times change. In the 70s it was rollerskating, and disco… remember those roller rinks? Skating in a circle while Donna “Love to Love You Baby” Summer moaned over the loudspeaker. Then it was king tut dancing. This while in the dark, light strobe and all.

Then it was skateboarding. My old board was a brick-like plastic sled from the 80s that bears no resemblance to today’s designs.

For kids today though, at least when they’re not turboing in the shopping malls with their roller shoes, scooters have a definite it factor. And why not? They incorporate Howard Hughes-like jumps in innovation. Forget about wood, screws and bearings.

These new scooters, like this Razor A2, are built using “aircraft-grade aluminum”. Then there’s the springless shock system, foldable T-tube and deck for portability and you start to wonder how fast this trickle down effect works… what’s next, air bags and navigation?

A scooter is probably a nice gift to give your nephew, niece or aging hipster. In San Francisco last weekend I saw plenty of them zipping all over the place. And, by the way, I did not see many Segways. What happened to the vision of a robot society navigating on 2-wheeled pogos from Starkbucks to Starkbucks (to Apple store)?
